OIDFA exists to bring together lacemakers from all over the world. The most visible way in which it does this is through its Congress and General Assembly. This is held in a different country every two years, with the next Congress in Groningen in 2008. OIDFA also promotes study groups which conduct research on particular aspects of lace and publish their findings.
OIDFA publishes a quarterly magazine, The Bulletin, which members receive as part of their subscription. This contains news, articles and patterns from specialists in different fields. The articles are written in English and French, the two official languages of the organization.
